Why welded studs are gaining ground over rivets and conventional fastenings
In recent years, rivets have been losing ground to studs. The reason is simple: studs are faster to install, more economical, and require less maintenance. But within the world of studs, there is more variety than it seems. There are threaded studs, plain studs, internally threaded studs, insulation pins, earthing terminals, and even special parts for welding directly onto the surface.
However, not all are suitable for the same purpose. And choosing incorrectly can turn a quick solution into a structural problem.
Stud welding allows, through a simple process, the joining of a screw/stud to a plate without the need to drill the surface, creating a heterogeneous joint and eliminating production costs. A simple and economical process.
The problem with studs in construction
Studs used in construction are generally high-strength. They withstand high loads, comply with standards, and pass inspections. But they have a weak point: when subjected to continuous vibration loads, they tend to loosen. The material doesn’t fail; the threaded joint fails. It’s a known problem, but no less serious for being known.
This is where stud welding makes the difference.
Welding instead of drilling
Stud welding allows the screw or stud to be joined directly to the plate without the need to drill the surface. It eliminates a step, saves time, and prevents weakening the base material with perforations. The resulting joint is heterogeneous, yes, but it is also clean, strong, and above all, permanent.
Depending on the plate thickness and the specific application, there are three different processes that determine both the welding power source and the type of stud to be used. Welding on thick structural plate is not the same as welding on thin sheet. Nor is a permanent fixing the same as a detachable anchor.
